Defenestration is a humor magazine. We don’t worry about the particulars of genre, style, or form as long as the work is funny. What exactly constitutes as “funny” varies from person to person, but we try to publish a wide range of humor, from the ridiculous to the satirical, and everything in between.
Submissions which are emailed or posted to us will be disregarded except in a few circumstances. If you suffer from a disability that makes using our form hard (including where you have an anxiety related to using forms) then please email (preferably) or write to us to explain and we will let you know how to submit by email or letter.

We welcome submissions of previously unpublished manuscripts of all lengths, ranging from short short stories to complete book-length works for serialization. Narrative regularly publishes fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, including stories, novels, novel excerpts, novellas, personal essays, humor, sketches, memoirs, literary biographies.
Fiction submissions should be a maximum of 3,000 words. Poetry submissions should include a maximum of 6 poems. Fiction and poetry submissions are accepted only via Submittable. Please see the statements from our editors, below, for more details. We are reading pitches for essays, dispatches, humor, and visual art.
We currently accept the following public submissions on a rolling basis: Comedy Articles - Satire and parodies, observational humor, funny stories, humorous guides or essays, and open letters, including evergreen topics with an original approach, timely and topical humor, and offbeat ideas.
Does Reader’s Digest accept fictional material or poetry? Unfortunately we cannot encourage writers to submit their original fiction as our magazine is not a good market for it.
